Whale ‘involved in other deaths’

I have always said, feral animals are not pets. People shouldn’t be surprised or complain when nature kicks in.

A SeaWorld spokesman has said a killer whale that attacked and killed a trainer in Orlando is the same one involved in two other deaths, including that of a Canadian trainer.

SeaWorld spokesman Fred Jacobs said the whale that killed 40-year-old trainer Dawn Brancheau in front of a horrified audience is named Tilikum.

Tilikum was one of three whales blamed for killing a trainer in 1991 at Sealand of the Pacific in Victoria, British Columbia.

A man’s body was also found draped over Tilikum at Orlando SeaWorld in July 1999.

Daniel Dukes reportedly made his way past security at SeaWorld and either jumped, fell or was pulled into the water of Tilikum’s tank.

A post-mortem examination ruled he died of hypothermia, but authorities said it appeared Tilikum bit the man and tore off his swimming trunks.

Orange County Fire Rescue spokesman John Mulhall says paramedics were called to the Shamu Stadium at the theme park where they found Ms Brancheau, who could not be revived.

Park visitor Victoria Biniak told WKMG-TV that the trainer had just finished explaining to the audience the show they were about to see.

Biniak said the whale suddenly came up from the water, grabbed the trainer around the waist and "thrashed her all around" to the point the trainer’s shoe fell off.

Visitors were evacuated from the park, which was then closed.
